NEKOOSA – On June 7 and 8, 159 schools throughout Wisconsin, including Ashwaubenon, Denmark, DePere, Notre Dame Academy, and Preble (to name a few), with approximately 2000 students competed head to head in the Wisconsin State High School Clay Target League Trap Tournament. The annual tournament is held at the Wisconsin Trapshooting Association Shooting Complex (WTA Homegrounds) in Nekoosa.
Ashwaubenon had five student participants from the High school and Parkview Middle School. Landen Beck (AHS), Connor Hendrickson (AHS), Kaeson Lopez (Parkview), Landon Thyes (AHS), and Blake Weiner (AHS) knocked down a combined 351 out of 500 targets and ranked 77th overall.
Students are shooting two, 25 target rounds (50 total), at clay targets that are slightly larger than 4 inches in diameter, 1 inch thick, traveling between 42-45 miles per hour, at an unknown angle between 0-22 degrees left or right of center, and they themselves are positioned 0 to 22 degrees left or right of center. The state competition is 100 rounds total.
Upcoming season
The fall season registration opens the first Monday in August and shooting begins the last week of August.
The first week is known as the SAFE shoot where instructions are provided to new shooters, followed by 2 weeks of practice. The 3rd week is a reserved week used in case of inclement weather, and the last 5 weeks are the competition weeks.
There is no travel as all of the shooting events are held locally by Ashwaubenon’s sponsor organization the New Franken Sportsmen’s Club.
The spring season registration opens the first Monday in February and shooting begins the last week of March. The spring season culminates with the State Trap Tournament held the first weekend of June and is open to all participants. The National competition is held the second week of July and is only open to those individuals who achieve a 22 or higher (out of 25) average.
The Ashwaubenon Trap Team is a self-sustaining club started in 2020 by Coach Tom Beno, a class of 1985 graduate.
The program is open to all Ashwaubenon students from 6th to 12th grades. Each student must have their Wisconsin Hunter’s Safety certificate and/or complete the SAFE educational program. Each student must also provide their own firearm as well as ammunition.
