Bay Port defeats Ashwaubenon 94-59 in Tuesday matchup

Posted

BAY PORT — Bay Port (11-4) put together one of its most complete performances of the season Tuesday night, rolling past Ashwaubenon 94-59 behind sharp ball movement, efficient shooting, and consistent defensive pressure.

The Pirates set the tone early and never let up, using a balanced offensive attack to build a 37-26 halftime lead before putting up an impressive 57 points in the second half. By the final buzzer, Bay Port had shot 58% from the field and 50% from three.

By the end of the first half, Bay Port’s offense was led by AJ Ivy and JT Meyer. Ashwaubenon stayed within reach early off the back of Carson Dorgu, who led the Jaguars through the first half and worked to keep his team competitive.

Bay Port senior Sawyer Durkee said the key to the offensive explosion was patience and trust.

“Every time, we worked for a good shot, [and] moved the ball,” Durkee said. “We didn’t settle for the first open shot. We got a really good look every time. And I think when we do that every time down, we’re going to be tough to stop offensively because we have so many different people who can step out and shoot it.”

That balance showed up all night. Twelve Pirates scored, and seven finished with at least seven points. Durkee led Bay Port with 14 points while also contributing five steals, four rebounds, and two assists. JT Meyer added 13 points on 6-of-8 shooting and grabbed four steals respectively, while Roman Binns chipped in 11 points and a game high seven assists. Ivy and Kamden Finlan each scored 10, giving Bay Port five players in double digits.

Ashwaubenon battled on the offensive end but struggled to keep pace as Bay Port pushed the tempo after halftime. Tashawn Wright led the Jaguars with 15 points on an efficient 6-of-6 shooting, while Dorgu finished with 12 points and six steals. Kingston Yang added 10 points, but Ashwaubenon’s 17 turnovers proved fatal.

Durkee said preparation played a major role, especially against Ashwaubenon’s physical style.

“Well, we did a lot of different rebounding drills during practice because they crash the offensive board a lot,” Durkee said. “So we did a lot of just rebounding stuff offensively and defensively and try to just be physical back and try and limit their offensive rebounds.”

That focus helped Bay Port keep Ashwaubenon from building momentum. The Pirates finished with 22 assists and just eight turnovers, controlling the flow of the game from start to finish.

Bay Port’s second half surge quickly put the game out of reach for the Jaguars. The Pirates outscored Ashwaubenon 57-33 after the break, stretching the margin with consistent shooting and defensive activity that led to eight team steals.

Despite the loss, Ashwaubenon showed flashes of its physical identity, but ultimately could not slow Bay Port once the game sped up.

With the win, Bay Port continued to build confidence as it moves deeper into the season. Durkee said the mindset remains unchanged heading into their next matchup against Green Bay Southwest.

“We’re going to prepare for them no differently than we did any other team,” Durkee said of the upcoming game. “Practice the same, go hard, and don’t take them lightly because any team can beat any team on any given day.”

Bay Port will return to action Friday when it travels to Green Bay Southwest, while Ashwaubenon will look to regroup as it prepares for its next game against Green Bay Preble.
