City of Neighborhoods: Olde Norwood

Posted

GREEN BAY – Sly Chou became a first time home-buyer less than two years ago, and not long after inherited another large-scale yet rewarding responsibility.

Last November, Chou was elected president of the Olde Norwood Neighborhood Association (NA).

Since then, she has worked with her fellow board members to rebuild their home’s NA.

Chou shared that prior to last November, though the NA never officially disbanded, it was inactive due to a lack of resources.
“(The board) was trying to keep it active, but then they just didn’t have enough support,” said Chou.

Olde Norwood’s new board now consists of five active members — four of whom are new.

Chou is also a business owner herself — a significant factor in what inspired her to lead the Olde Norwood NA.

She became aware of Green Bay’s NAs through the City of Green Bay’s website, which includes a map to identify which NA city residents belong to.

Once Chou got the ball rolling, Olde Norwood began to participate in and host some of the area’s most beloved events.

One notable event is the “Keys to the City” festival, which many of the city’s NAs made sure to participate in.

Because of their involvement, Olde Norwood now has a painted piano that permanently resides in their local park.

Another event that Chou shared her pride in was the Olde Norwood cookie swap.

“It was fun to meet people in our neighborhood — a lot of people brought homemade cookies that they made, so it was fun to kind of share our local recipes and just get to know each other. We haven’t had community events in a while with the Neighborhood Association, so I think it was pretty refreshing for people to have a chance to get out there and meet each other,” Chou said about the event.

Chou also shared her appreciation for the two grants that Olde Norwood received from the City of Green Bay to beautify their neighborhood sign and survey neighborhood residents.

“We plan on going door to door, greeting our neighbors and trying to survey them to see what they want from us,” said Chou.

What’s next

“If you live in this neighborhood or around here and you want to get more involved in your neighborhood and creating community, please come and attend our events,” said Chou.

Chou also recommends interested residents to follow “Olde Norwood Neighborhood Association” on Facebook; she shared this avenue is the main way for the NA to update their community.

Interested residents are also invited to attend the NA’s local monthly meetings at Badger State Brewing on the first Monday of every month.

Finally, Olde Norwood will be sending out a neighborhood newsletter in the upcoming months with details regarding their annual meeting.
