GREEN BAY – On Wednesday, May 22, families filled the Weidner Center to celebrate NEW Scholars.

As a branch of CollegeReady, NEW Scholars prepares students from underrepresented backgrounds for a successful academic future.

“Through academic support, college prep, parent workshops, service learning and much more, NEW Scholars breaks down barriers to higher education that exist for many low-income and first-generation students. Some of the program’s pillars of success include reading, writing, leadership and character development, school success, and parent engagement. Participating students earn up to a $5,000 scholarship to the college/university of their choice,” CollegeReady Operations Director Jenny Tice said.

This year, CollegeReady graduated 18 students from the NEW Scholars program, including Guadalupe Alvarez Gonzàlez, Ivonne Aranda, Angel De León Guerra, Melissa Dejesus, Mariana Flores Aleman, Zachary Holder and Emily Palacios from Green Bay East High School; Paula Carmela Andres, Sergio Arjón-Plascencia, Alejandra Baràjas Perez, Brandon Carmóna, Jessica De Jesus Reyes, Michael García, Juana Garcia-Razo, Patricia Guzman, Deisy Mendoza Mariscal and Itzel Perez from Preble High School; as well as Kimberley Ponce Nicanor from Green Bay Southwest High School.

The graduates were accepted into a variety of colleges, which was celebrated at the event with a letter of intent signing.

The signing was overseen by Chancellor Micheal Alexander of UW-Green Bay and Dr. Kristen Raney of Northeast Wisconsin Technical College (NWTC), who welcomed the scholars not only into UW-Green Bay and NWTC but also UW-Madison, UW-Milwaukee, UW-Eau Claire and St. Norbert College.

NEW Scholars in grades 6-11 were also recognized for their hard work during the past year.

Students were awarded with one of three awards — NEW Scholars Certificate of Merit, NEW Scholars Achievement Award or the NEW Scholars Excellence Award.

CollegeReady hosts a variety of scholarships, programs and volunteer opportunities in the Green Bay area and NEW Scholars is currently accepting student applications for the 2024-25 school year.
