Emplify hosts Golden House, illuminates sky bridge purple for domestic violence survivors

Posted

GREEN BAY — In honor of Domestic Violence Awareness Month Emplify Health is collaborating with Golden House to recognize survivors through the Purple Porch Project.

“This is a tough topic, it’s a painful topic, and for many people, it’s a very personal topic. Domestic violence is not always visible, but its impact reaches far beyond the home,” said Heather Schimmers. “By speaking openly, recognizing the signs and making support easier to find, we can absolutely help those that are impacted.”

The Webster Avenue skywalk has been illuminated purple for the month of October as a symbol of solidarity with those who have experienced domestic violence or abuse.

“Lighting our skywalk purple is a simple act, but it carries a powerful message. It says to those that are experiencing domestic violence: You are seen, you are believed and you are not alone,” said Schimmers.

The Purple Porch Project is a nation-wide initiative to display a visible symbol of hope for the one in four women and one in seven men who experience domestic violence at some point in their lives.

Golden House, a local safe haven for abuse victims, has brought the initiative to Green Bay and is imploring members of the local community to purchase a purple porch kit to bring awareness to the issue.

“Emplify Health has been a proud partner of Golden House since its earliest days (…) united by a shared commitment of supporting survivors and creating a safer community,” said Schimmers.

Golden House has been serving the Green Bay community since 1979 with the mission of providing safety and support for domestic violence victims.

“Too often, survivors face fear, isolation and uncertainty about where to turn for help,” said Executive Director of Golden House Meika Burnikel.

Anyone interested in purchasing a purple porch kit can do so for $40 at goldenhousegb.org or 920212safe.org.

Those experiencing domestic violence or abuse are encouraged to reach out to a number of community resources including Emplify Health and Golden House. The 24/7 free service line is (920)-212-SAFE.
