Free parenting seminars at FCRNEW

Posted

GREEN BAY – It takes a village to raise a child, and at the Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W they are open to help any parent.

The Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W is a family resource center that offers parenting seminars, support groups, childcare referrals, education and more.

The center is grant-funded through the Wisconsin Child Abuse and Neglect Prevention Board to offer free help for all parents.

Each month year round, the center hosts a series of free parenting seminars that cover the Triple P Program (Power of Positive Parenting) and other topics.

This March, the three free parenting seminars will take place on March 10, 17 and 24.

Karla Jenquin is a family support coordinator who has taught several Triple P seminars throughout the last eight years, along with several other programs through The Family & Childcare Resources of N.E.W.

Jenquin explained that this seminar is designed for parents of children 0-12 but not exclusive to parents of older teens.

These seminars are mostly lecture-based, but involve discussion and activities as well.

The first seminar will be covering the Triple P Program which stands for “Power of Positive Parenting.”

The seminar entails general parenting and how people feel about being parents, pursuing self care.

“Self care is involved because we don’t want parents to forget about themselves as well,” said Jenquin.

The seminar helps parents reflect on how they instruct their children as well; “How do we give our kids instructions, how do we tell them what to do and what kind of response do we give back?” said Jenquin.

The second seminar is “Raising Confident, Competent Children.”

This seminar includes discussing logical consequences, problem solving and self esteem. When talking about problem solving, Jenquin also explained the importance of teaching parents, instead of trying to fix their children’s problems, to teach them the steps on how to do it instead.

This then leads into building a sense of self esteem, “Encouraging them and reminding them of what they’re doing well so they can recognize their accomplishments,” said Jenquin. “Because the more we ourselves that were doing a good job, that’s going to carry on with us into our adulthood.”

The last seminar will be discussing “Raising Resilient Children”. “We talk about emotions, and how to let kids know it’s okay to have an emotion and teaching them hopefully positive ways to express that emotion and the words to use to express it”, said Jenquin. “Parenting is all about role-modeling, they copy what we say and do so it’s also being aware of our actions and reactions to our kids.”

“Our hope and goal is that they can take one little thing that maybe they can change and do differently. We want parents to know that we’re all in this together, and if you’re struggling, chances are you’re not alone.”
