On Saturday, July 19, the Gardeners Club of Green Bay will host its third annual Garden Walk event, inviting the community in to explore seven of the best privately owned gardens in the area.
Among those seven yards, attendees of the Garden Walk can expect to see a wide variety of features, including fountains, orchards, walking trails and more.
“We have a lot of plants and things like that,” said Deb Schumacher, member of the Gardeners Club of Green Bay. “We have some that have chicken houses. We have some that have vegetable gardens.
We’ve got a couple that have ponds. There’s a lot of neat artwork amongst the flowers and plants. It’s always fun and it’s something that’s kind of relatable to anybody. Anybody can add artwork to their garden and make it look cool. So we use a lot of artwork and a lot of plants.”
The seven gardens in the walk this year are all located on the west side of the Fox River, showcasing lot sizes from regular city lots to large rural lots.
And with so much variety, there is sure to be something for everyone to not only enjoy, but to take home as inspiration for their own garden.
“Everybody’s got a lot of annuals and perennials and bushes and trees in all different kinds,” Schumacher said. “It’s just a lot of neat stuff. There’s a real variety from the super natural garden scene to a little more formal gardens and from the smaller to the bigger. We’re just trying to have something for everybody to enjoy so you can leave every yard and say, ‘Oh, I could do that in my yard.’”
At the end of the day, Schumacher said she hopes attendees walk away with a deeper appreciation for the care and effort put into each of the gardens on display.
“[I want them to] see how much love there is and to see how we work with nature,” she said. “We probably have 300 little chipmunks running around all the time and we get deer and we’ve got everything that’s wildlife in the yard and we coexist with it. We have a pollinator garden, we have fish… All that stuff. It’s just showing that you can do it and that it’s fun. It’s just so fun to have people come to your yard and see what you’ve been doing. And to be able to share that, it makes gardening so much more fun.”
This year’s Garden Walk will take attendees through the gardens of Deb and Tim Freeman, Heather Nawolski and Scott Giannunzio, Deb Schumacher and Jim Hebel, Judy and Ken Sikora, Amy Jo and Jared Tetzner, Joe Nooyen, and Christine Olsen.
Tickets are available for advance sale for $15 until July 17 at Larry’s Bellevue Gardens, Take 5 Restaurant at Four Seasons and McAllister’s Landscape Supplies and Gift Shop.
Day-of tickets will be available for $20 at each of the gardens until the limit of 500 guests is reached.
Included with each ticket are coupons for local garden centers and restaurants.
A portion of the proceeds from the Garden Walk will be donated to benefit local nonprofit agriculture and beautification organizations in Brown County.
