GREEN BAY – Volunteers were busy during Good Neighbor Week helping select Green Bay homeowners with minor home repairs and property improvements.

Good Neighbor Week, now in its fourth year, is an event coordinated by the Good Neighbor Week Committee in partnership with NeighborWorks Green Bay, Green Bay Neighborhoods and the City of Green Bay, offering the opportunity for community members to meet and lend a helping hand to their neighbors in need.

Green Bay residents had the opportunity to nominate their neighbors earlier this year for assistance with projects on their property, and volunteers from area organizations, including Home Depot, Nicolet National Bank, Berkshire Hathaway, HomeServices, Imperial Services, the City of Green Bay and Wipfli LLP, came together Sept. 24-30 to make those projects happen.

On Monday, Sept. 24, volunteers tackled two house-painting projects on Chestnut Avenue and Thorndale Street.

Tarl Knight, director of Shipyard District, Inc., was volunteering at the Chestnut Avenue project and said projects like those done during Good Neighbor Week not only benefit individual homeowners, but also serve to bring the neighborhood and communities like the Shipyard District together.

“There’s such a skepticism to come together as neighbors in this really limited-resource area where people are constantly looking out for them and their own and it’s hard to organize when you’ve got all of your attention on putting food on the table and paying those bills,” he said. “Making steps like this is really going to show people that when you organize with your neighbors and help each other out, things can come together for everyone.”
