Howard Plan Commission paves way for potential swim facility

Posted

HOWARD – During their Feb. 17 meeting, Howard Plan Commission members unanimously approved a rezoning request and conditional use approval that will pave the way for a swimming facility at 2938 Shawano Ave., Green Bay.

Susie Van Ekeren, Wisconsin Swim Academy owner, is proposing a learn-to-swim facility for the property that sits adjacent to the Howard Commons.

Van Ekeren is a “lifelong swim enthusiast” who began teaching swim lessons in the backyard of her home in 2008.

She currently owns and operates a 6,000 square-foot aquatic center in north Appleton that features an 88° temperature-controlled pool.

“We are a learn-to-swim program. We’ve been there for the last five years and that is all we do. It is generally little kids who are in our pool,” she explained to the commission.

“We don’t have anyone coming in to swim laps or anything like that. We teach young kids how to swim. We have a maximum of three in a class. That pool is actually very small and it is just open to families that want to have kids that know how to swim.”

Following a public hearing a vote Motion to approve the rezoning of the parcel at 2938 Shawano Ave., from R-2 Residential Single Family Duplex by Subdivision to B-1 Business was unanimously approved, followed by a unanimous vote for a conditional use request for recreational use.

“I think it is a great idea for that location. I think it’s one more reason to go to the (Howard) Commons. Hopefully, we can get more developments like that,” said Plan Commission Chair Burt McIntyre.

Detailed plans and a site plan will return to the committee for approval.
