Howard-Suamico School District recognizes longtime coach

HOWARD-SUAMICO – During its Jan. 6 meeting, the Howard-Suamico School District Board of Education recognized Travis Herber for his 24-year coaching career with Bay Port High School.

“His career record of 252 wins, 129 losses and 44 ties led his teams to regional titles in 2005, 2008, 2012 and 2020,” the board said in a proclamation.

“As a community partner who owns team apparel, Coach Herber has the unique ability to inspire others to work for a common team goal. He, himself, is a team player who helps others become their very best.

“On behalf of the board of education and the Howard-Suamico School District, we extend our sincere well wishes to Coach Herber as he retires, and we formally recognize him for his dedication to the betterment of hundreds of student-athletes in the boys soccer program.”

His motto, “15 minutes early is on time; on time is late; and late is unacceptable” was noted as the board conveyed Herber’s impact on his athletes in teaching them life skills.

“On behalf of myself and my family, for 20 years of being part of Bay Port and the boys soccer program, I can’t thank you guys enough,” Herber said.

“The Howard-Suamico School District is definitely one of the best to be a part of as a coach. I’m done as a coach, but yet I’m still volunteering in ways to help keep involved, because I still want to be around here.

“I started in 1999 as the boys assistant basketball coach [and when] the boys soccer position became available my wife was kind enough to let me apply for it, not knowing 20 years later we’d still be doing this. But I can’t thank my family enough…

“It’s time, when your body and your mind start to tell you it’s a lot to put in, it’s time to start to enjoy the progression of your efforts and watch somebody else enjoy the successes…

“Thank you for this honor. It’s definitely one of the best parts of my life.”

Wiebel selected as Bay Port Principal, Frieder retires

The Howard-Suamico School District has also selected Jo Wiebel to serve as principal of Bay Port High School effective July 1.

“This decision follows Mr. Mike Frieder’s retirement announcement. After 30 years as Bay Port principal, he will retire at the end of this school year,” a district release stated.

“Mr. Wiebel and Mr. Frieder will work hand-in-hand throughout the remainder of the 2024-25 school year to ensure a smooth transition. We are confident that this collaborative approach will help Bay Port maintain its momentum of exceptional education.

“Mr. Wiebel has made a noteworthy positive impact for seven years as Bay Port associate principal, and we are excited to keep the tradition of excellence alive and well at Bay Port,” added Superintendent Mark Smith. “We are grateful to have such a talented internal leader ready to serve during this critical transition as we continue working with students and families to prepare them for a successful and meaningful future.”

Wiebel joined the district in 2018 as associate principal following 14 years with Green Bay Area Public School District.
