Jaguars Student Spotlight: Matt Farley-Lacrosse

Posted

By Murray Gleffe, Correspondent

Name:              Matt Farley

Activity:           Lacrosse

LaCrosse is a city in Wisconsin, but it also is one of the fastest growing sports in the United States.

It is a team sport (no more than 10 players on the field for each team) played where the head of the lacrosse stick is used to carry, catch, pass, and shoot the ball into the goal. Offensive and defensive players are limited to where they can be on the field.

All players wear protective gear of some sort for contact and safety.

Just like in other sports, there is a penalty area, time-outs are called, a halftime is issued, and an extra session is played in late season games involving tournament play.

Typical games at the high school level consist of 50-minute games (four quarters or two halves) where the team with the most goals at the end of the match-up wins the contest.

What is it like to be a leader on the Metro Rebels Lacrosse team being a student at Ashwaubenon High School? “It’s awesome being a leader with the other seniors on the team. Having the younger players look up to me is very humbling. I want to live up to the leadership qualities my older brother Nick and all of the previous Rebels team captains have demonstrated before me.”

What is your most embarrassing moment ever in Lacrosse? “During our game against De Pere my freshman year, I received a “buddy pass” from our goalie, which is a high, slow pass that sits up in the air longer than it should. I was running to catch the ball and as I caught it, I turned to run up field and got destroyed by one of the De Pere players. It was really embarrassing getting hit like that and I had to sit out for the rest of the game.”

How many years have you been involved in Lacrosse? “This will be my 4th year playing for the Rebels and I played 3 years before that for different youth lacrosse leagues around the Ashwaubenon/Green Bay area.”

What is your most memorable moment?  “Beating Southwest last year, because we had lost to them earlier in the season.”

What's the hardest part about performing in a Lacrosse game?  “Having to get over your nervousness before a game. Before I start the game, my heart is racing and my hands are shaking, but once I touch the ball for the first time, I relax and focus on the task at hand.”

If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be? “Michael B. Jordan”

What are your college aspirations?  “I will be attending UWGB to get my bachelor’s degree in human biology. I then plan to transfer to either UW-Lacrosse or Concordia to further my education.”

What would your dream job be once you graduate?  “Physical therapist”

What are your hobbies? “Carrying my friends in Fortnite, hanging out with friends, and swimming.”

What is your favorite event ever attended? “Any Packer game with my friends or family.”

What is your favorite type of music? “I like most music, but rap is my favorite."

What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? “Watch Youtube videos and make funny tweets.”

What three words describe you? “Funny, motivated, relaxed”

Comments on Matt Farley: “It has been a pleasure to coach Matthew for the past four years,” commented Nick Sawyer, Rebels Lacrosse Coach. “He is a dedicated Lacrosse player and has shown leadership on the Rebels team. Matthew also has a good sense of humor, making practices fun for his teammates. Although it has not yet become a WIAA sport in Wisconsin, there has been an increased interest in the sport over the last decade. There are 40 high school teams across the state of Wisconsin with 12 alone in the Bay Valley conference. There is a recognized state championship, and also a youth program in Green Bay for 3rd through 8th graders.”
