Meister selected to fill vacant GBAPS seat

Posted

GREEN BAY – Following candidate interviews, the Green Bay Area Public Schools Board of Education selected Samantha Meister to fill the seat vacated by Kou Lee.

Candidates participating in the June 16 interviews included Miranda Schornack, Alyssa Proffitt, Matthew Seegert, Rick Crosson, Aaron Lee and Samantha Meister.

Brant Pearson dropped from consideration prior to the interviews.

Election took place through a balloting process, which wound down to a 3-3 tie between Crosson and Meister.

“I can see two options here,” GBAPS Board Member Andrew Becker said during discussion after the tie vote.

“I can see everyone agreeing on a proven candidate, which is Rick Crosson, who has done a lot, so much for this district in his time on the board and will continue. I'll just say, while I would never say this to justify an unqualified candidate, it's very easy for me to say when we have a very qualified candidate that it is a healthy thing to not have an all White board in this district, and again, that I would never go to an unqualified candidates there, but we have a very qualified candidate that would make that a nonissue, and regardless of the circumstances, the spot we are replacing is a spot that was filled by a minority candidate.”

The next — and final — round of balloting resulted in a 4-2 vote for Meister.

Meister is an associate professor of education with UW-Green Bay

She holds a PhD in curriculum and instruction from Texas A&M University, a masters in reading and literacy from the University of Nebraska-Omaha and a bachelors in special education from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
