¡Estamos Aqui! Festival Hispano celebrates Latino culture in Northeast Wisconsin

Posted

On Saturday, Sept. 19, ¡Estamos Aqui! Festival Hispano will return to UW-Green Bay for its fourth year celebrating Latino culture in Northeast Wisconsin.

“A group of Latinos, in collaboration with Casa Alba, started this festival four years ago, and we partnered with The Weidner to be able to make it what it is today…” said Maria Padilla, one of the festival’s organizers.

“It brings our community together to either celebrate or become aware of a culture that maybe you didn’t know a lot about. It helps Latinos in the Green Bay community feel more welcome and have a platform to celebrate who they are and what our culture is.”

More than a festival, Estamos Aquí aims to not only celebrate, but also honor and integrate Latino heritage through music, food, language and entertainment.

Highlights of the event include live music, art, food, a car show and more.

“There’s a little bit for everyone,” Padilla said. “We have a ton of food and vendors that are selling little knicknacks for fun little items, and then of course they’re music… If you can, for sure check out a little bit of all the pieces.”

Padilla and others on the event committee prioritized using Latino-owned businesses and vendors in putting the festival together — from the vendors at the festival to the creation of the marketing materials.

UW-Green Bay international student Larissa De Oliveira worked with Khrome Agency to develop the artwork for this year’s festival.

“When I got the email, I was out of it…” De Oliveira said. “I never thought that would be an opportunity or a possibility.. Of course we design in classes here and we have projects, but it’s different to design something for a class and to design something that means so much to me and to everyone. It means everything because this is the first step for me to grow as a designer and as an artist outside of school. I’ve been super interested in culture — not only my culture, but all the other cultures — and how art can represent it and this was the perfect opportunity with the perfect people to help me experience that.”

De Oliveira has been attending Estamos Aquí since the inaugural festival in 2023.

“When [Khrome] emailed me about it, I got so excited because I’ve been going to Estamos Aquí since my first year here…” De Oliveira said. “The second or third week of the semester, they had the festival and I remember going with all my international friends and we had some other people from other countries in Latin America… And then besides celebrating our own culture, it was also a moment to educate our other international friends that were not from Latin America about how we party and the foods we have.”

Back in 2023, the festival was born from the vision and collaboration of Latino leaders who dreamed of a space where their culture could be shared freely and proudly — a vision the community embraced with more than 25,000 visitors to the festival since its inception.

“Before I came here to the U.S., I never thought about how big the Latino community was here,” De Oliveira said. “But in my first few weeks, I already found out that we were a really important part of the community… [Estamos Aquí] feels like a little piece of home away from home.”
