Sydney Aird is a senior member of the Bay Port girls’ swimming team.
As a junior, she contributed 38.5 points to a Bay Port team that finished eighth at the WIAA Division 1 alternate fall state meet held this past spring.
Aird said the greatest advice she has received is from her parents, who told her to stay calm and relaxed in every situation.
She said she’s afraid of amusement parks.
How much do you rely on your teammates to push you?
“Relays are one of my favorite events. They’re worth twice the points of individual events, so they determine the outcome of a meet. Having teammates behind the blocks with you is fun and motivates everyone to swim their best.”
Talk about your success.
What teammate would you like to be with if you were trapped in an elevator?
“My little sister, Addison. She’s a good problem solver, so I think she could find a way out.”
Talk about how special your family is.
“My family has been supportive and helpful the entire time I’ve been swimming. My parents come to every meet.”
What’s your most embarrassing swimming moment?
“At the state meet this past season, I fell trying to get out of the pool. When I went back to watch my race, I realized the camera was focused on me the whole time.”
If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be?
“Being a famous actress would be cool. I’d want to attend a red-carpet event.”
What are your goals for the 2021-22 season?
“I want to improve my times and help my team continue the success we’ve had in recent years.”
What’s your daily routine like?
“It’s not terribly exciting. During the school year, I get up and go to swimming practice, go to school and then go back to swimming practice again. I come home and do homework for the rest of the night.”
Favorite picture in your room?
“I have lots of different pictures on my desk of vacations, friends, family and teammates. There’s one with the rest of the state team from my freshman year, which is important to me.”
What are your college aspirations?
"I recently verbally committed to swim at the University of Northern Iowa and plan to study biology."
Chicago or New York City?
“New York. I’ve been to both places, but there was more to do and see in New York.”
If you could make one addition/renovation to Bay Port, what would you want to see?
“An Olympic-size pool would be cool.”
What are your hobbies?
“Baking, cooking, reading, watching movies and gardening.”
What one word describes you?
“Determined.”
What are your favorite music genres?
“Pop and indie.”
If you could listen to any song before a meet, what would it be?
“A Lorde song.”
Fruits or vegetables?
“Vegetables.”
Talk about a volunteer moment.
“I used to volunteer at Exceptional Equestrians helping provide horse-riding therapy for people. It was nice to see people’s excitement to be around the horses.”
Driving or flying to a vacation?
“Flying.”
Who’s your favorite swimmer?
“Katie Ledecky. She’s had lots of success, and she seems down-to-earth and genuine.”
What three things will you miss about Bay Port?
“My swimming team, my other friends and my teachers.”
