Packerland Sunrise Rotary Storybook Trail project gets approval from Howard Village Board

Posted

The Howard Village Board recently approved a request from the Packerland Sunrise Rotary Club to partner on a Storybook Trail at Spring Green Park Arboretum.

The Storybook Trail would utilize the existing trail with opportunities to stop at story panels and read a featured children’s book together while experiencing the Arboretum as an outdoor literacy and nature destination.

“The idea behind the Storybook Trail is to promote literacy amongst our children,” said Nancy Loberger of the Packerland Sunrise Rotary Club. “What we’d like to create is a literary wonderland for kids and a place for people who are taking care of kids to go and give them something to do.”

The Rotary Club hopes to change out the story three or four times a year and build a library of books to rotate over the year.

“The long-term vision is a unified ‘Once Upon a Trail’ experience,” a proposal to the Village Board said, with plans to incorporate “natural stone, warm wood, native and pollinator-friendly plantings, cottage-garden accents, simple book-themed seating and discovery areas that feel whimsical while remaining realistic for public park maintenance.”

After the Storybook Trail is established, the Rotary Club indicated it will look to incorporate a variety of additions, including benches, a small amphitheater, a reading nook and a sensory garden.
