GREEN BAY – The University of Wisconsin-Green Bay men's basketball program and Head Coach Will Ryan recently announced the additions of Clarence Cummings III and Zae Blake to the roster.
Cummings, a native of Orlando, Florida, will join the Phoenix after spending several seasons at the State College of Florida.
This past season as a redshirt sophomore, he averaged 11.5 points per game while starting 29 of the Manatees' 30 games.
He shot 40.7% from the field, 31.9% from beyond the 3-point arc and 74% from the free-throw line.
Cummings also averaged six rebounds and 3.3 assists per game.
After his strong sophomore campaign, he was named First-Team All-Southern Conference.
“We’re thrilled with the addition of (Cummings) to our program,” Ryan said. “He’s a strong, athletic and versatile wing/forward. On the offensive end, he does a little bit of everything well, which enables him to play multiple positions and cause mismatches. Defensively, he competes with a high motor and can guard 1-5, if need be. His energy, toughness and winning mentality will be a huge boost to our program.”
Cummings said he’s happy to be in Green Bay.
“I chose Green Bay because they were one of the first Division I schools to take an interest in me,” he said. “The program seems like a place I can grow as a basketball player and person.”
Blake will join the Phoenix after spending two seasons at Southwest Mississippi Community College in Summit, Mississippi.
Blake started 21 of the Bears' 25 games and averaged 12.8 points per game.
The sophomore from Washington, D.C., shot 38.9% from the field, 32.7% from beyond the 3-point arc and converted 82.9% of his free throws.
Before he began his collegiate career, he set a team record for most three-pointers in a game (11) at Hargrave Military Academy in Chatham, Virginia, and was named the team's Most Outstanding Player as a senior.
“We’re also super excited to welcome (Blake) into our program,” Ryan said. “He’s a quick, athletic and dynamic point guard who knows when to score and when to facilitate. He’s what you want in a point guard because he orchestrates the offense and loves making his teammates better. His ability to use his quickness to get in the paint and score or set up a teammate is a much-needed addition to our offense. Defensively, he will be a huge asset by using his length and quickness to disrupt on the ball and in passing lanes.”
Blake said he’s also happy to be playing for the Phoenix.
“I chose Green Bay because I feel the program is the best fit for me as an athlete,” he said. “The university also showed love and care for my academic career.”
Cummings and Blake join Garren Davis, Amari Jedkins and Donavan Short as Phoenix newcomers.
