Pulaski turns back Bay Port in boys’ soccer action, 4-2

Posted

SUAMICO – In the battle for the inaugural sword, the Pulaski High School boys’ soccer team struck first against Bay Port.

With the rivalry dating back to 1989 – the first year the two schools played one another in boys’ soccer – the Red Raiders turned back their Fox River Classic Conference (FRCC) foe, 4-2, on Sept. 22 at Bay Port High School.

Pulaski (7-2-2 overall, 1-2 FRCC) jumped out to a quick 3-0 lead in the first 30 minutes of action before the Pirates (3-5-2, 1-2) tallied a pair of goals shortly thereafter to make it a game heading into the second half.

The Red Raiders essentially put the game away in the 65th minute when Walker Wozniak scored his second goal of the night to end the scoring.

“You never know what’s going to happen in these games, so I was pleasantly surprised to jump out to a 3-0 lead,” Pulaski Coach Jeff Schneider said. “The game is 80 minutes, so I give Bay Port a lot of credit. [Bay Port Coach] Ryan Deprey does a great job, and they fought back. It was a battle the rest of the game.”

Wozniak found the back of the net in the 12th minute before Daenen Kehoe scored four minutes later to make it 2-0.

The Red Raiders got another first-half goal when Gunner Decker found the back of the net for a 3-0 lead.

After Grady Volmert got the Pirates on the board with a penalty kick in the 30th minute, Elijah Wettstein cut the deficit to 3-2 four minutes later.

The game stayed that way until Wozniak sealed the victory for Pulaski in the second half.

“We responded after the early deficit, but we need to play an 80-minute game,” Deprey said. “It was a disappointing game, but after we made a few changes, we gained a little momentum and came back a bit.”
