Redbirds soar to demanding win

De Pere – On Thursday, April 3, the De Pere Redbirds competed in their second match of the season as they soared to a commanding 9-0 victory against the Fox Valley Lutheran Foxes. 

As the game began, the Redbirds took a dominant lead after scoring three goals within the first two minutes of the game.  

Goals of the night were scored by junior Keira Washington with four goals, junior Zoe Fenlon with two goals, sophomore Adaiah Rezachek with two goals, and sophomore Alexa Spaeth with one goal.

“We obviously had a great start, scoring three goals in the first couple of minutes,” said Mike Picard, De Pere Girls Soccer Head Coach explained. “They really worked hard on the patterns that we are asking them to play, so I couldn’t ask for more than that as a coach.”

With a strong start from the Redbirds, they did not let down as they ended the first half 5-0 and started the second half with the same energy.

“I think [maintaining momentum] is easy with the support of my teammates that I have,” explained Washington. “We do a really good job of lifting each other up and keeping our foot on the pedal...I think it was a good game to really work on our fundamentals and do what we need to do for this season. I think we have a lot we need to get better on, but I think we executed things really well.

The Redbirds scored their final four goals within the first 10 minutes of the second half, ending the game at the 60 minute mark. 

Picard added, “The girls are doing everything we’re asking them to do in practice. Even though they are winning by a lot, they are still keeping to the patterns that we are working on in practice and still working hard with their teammates.” 

The Redbirds are ready to take on their next competitors as they will be away on Monday, April 7 where they will go up against Appleton West.

“We’re feeling really good,” said Washington. “We have really talented players. Overall, we’re pretty unstoppable. I think our connections [are] really good this season too.”
