Redbirds trounce Rufus King, play at Marquette in Level 2

Posted

DE PERE – Coming into his team’s WIAA Division 1 Level 1 football playoff game against Milwaukee Rufus King, De Pere Receiver Mason Sequin had one touchdown reception on the season.

All that changed for the senior in what was likely the last home game of his career.

Sequin had a career night against the Generals in a 45-3 victory on Oct. 25 at De Pere High School with four touchdown receptions from quarterback Marcus Schmidt.

Sequin caught a TD pass in the first quarter, two in the second and added another in the third in the lopsided victory.

“We worked in practice all week, and no one took this game for granted,” Sequin said. “We started with a run-first plan in the first quarter and turned on the passes in the second quarter and second half. I’ve been waiting all year for a game like this.”

De Pere, which improved to 7-3, will take a trip to Milwaukee on Nov. 1 to take on state-ranked and No. 1 seed Marquette – a 63-0 victor over Milwaukee Marshall in Level 1 – in a Level 2 game.

“I grew up playing Marquette every season playing in the Greater Metro Conference, and I have a ton of respect for them,” De Pere Coach Ben Strickland said. “They’ll be tough to move the ball on, and offensively, they’ve got some good weapons – it’ll be a big challenge for us.”

Besides Sequin’s big night, Schmidt and Dante Matta each rushed for scores, while kicker Cooper Hoisington booted a 28-yard field goal in the fourth quarter to close the scoring.

King – which was averaging more than 42 points per game during its last seven games of the regular season – was held to 15 yards of total offense in the first half.
