Students compete draft-style for over 200 paid internships

Posted

GREEN BAY – The 11th annual “Internship Draft Day” will be held at Lambeau Field on Wednesday, Nov. 5, 3-5:45 p.m.

Co-sponsored by Northeast Wisconsin Manufacturing Alliance (NEWMA) and the Northeast Wisconsin Educational Resource Alliance (NEW ERA), the event gives college students across Wisconsin and Upper Michigan the opportunity to interview over 50 NEWMA member companies who are offering more than 200 paid internships and co-ops.

Ann Franz, the executive director of NEWMA, explains how the event came together.

“We started working with local two and four year colleges, like UWGB, UW-Oshkosh, Fox Valley Technical College, bringing people all over the region together,” Franz said.

Nowadays, students travel from all over the state to attend the event.

Unlike most career fairs, college students will see their name posted up on a draft board, with points based on their GPA, extracurriculars and work experience.

However, one of the biggest differences is that students can prearrange 15-minute interviews with companies, with students earning points on how well they interview.

“Instead of waiting in line at our event, students can go and meet for available jobs and have the option to walk around,” Franz explained.

Franz also commented on the variety of internships available, mentioning career opportunities in fields from engineering to business, IT, math, etc. “It’s so important that all of them are paid,” she said.

Franz hopes that these interviews will connect talented individuals to great opportunities.

“It’s so rewarding to have people on our task force, these former students who go on to a full time position. It gives students a chance to experience company culture,” she added.

At the end of the event, the top point earners will be titled the number one draft pick of their college.

The top overall Draft Pick will receive a $2,500 college scholarship for the upcoming college term, but there are other opportunities to win a $500 college scholarship.

“Its important for interested students to pre-register, those competing receive an extra 50 points before Oct. 21st.” Franz added.

Some of the recruiting companies include: American Foods Group, EMT International, Green Bay Packaging, Nicolet Plastics, Plexus, Procter & Gamble, OEC Graphics, QPS Employment and Schreiber Foods.

Students who are interested can register for the free event at www.internshipdraftday.com.
