Ted Fritsch becomes fourth Packers HOF Legacy honored

GREEN BAY – On Sept. 25, a bronze bust and bronze plaque were presented to Notre Dame Academy by the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc.

The presentation occurred during an Alumni Tailgate Party, following a ribbon cutting for the school’s new alumni center.

The bust and plaque commemorate the contributions of Ted Fritsch Sr.

“So far, we’ve placed legacies — which included the bronze bust and bronze plaques for all of them — for Curly Lambeau at East High School, Vince Lombardi at Lombardi Middle School, and Arnie Herber at West High School,” said Don Sipes, who was joined by multiple members of Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc.
“We are now proud today to present our fourth legacy with Theodore ‘Ted’ Fritsch Sr. He had not only been a great Green Bay Packers player, but also did help the community and, of course, his family.

“The Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame Inc. mission includes honoring the history of the Green Bay Packers. It’s also our duty to make sure the Packers’ storied history continues.

“The early days of the Green Bay Packers is a time gone by. We hope the students, parents and rest of the community will be learning from Ted Fritsch’s bronze bust and plaque. They will both be present on what was called Ted Fritsch Field in 1986.

Fritsch played with the Packers 1942-50 as a fullback, linebacker and placekicker.

“The Packers did win the NFL Championship in 1944, and Ted scored two touchdowns to help win that game 14 to 7,” Sipes added.

He was inducted into the Green Bay Packers Hall of Fame in 1973.

“Ted was a football coach at Central Catholic in 1952 to 1954, which was then renamed and became Premontre High School. The school’s logo became the Cadets, which became a symbol of loyalty. Ted also coached basketball, baseball and track. He was at Premontre School from 1955 to 1966,” Sipes added.
Fritsch was inducted into the Triton Hall of Fame at Notre Dame Academy in 2022.

Two of Ted’s children, Tom and Tary, were on hand for the unveiling of the bust and plaque.

“His legacy in athletics was all about the Green Bay Packers, and you can read about that. But his human legacy was his zest for life, his love for young people — 15 years he spent here was just a given,” said Tom.
“I’m the youngest of the family; I came along a little bit later,” said Tary. “I came after football, and I got to experience the man after football. The community leader —although growing up with the Packers — the integrity, values, honesty, kindness, everything that he embodied and showed everybody else, that’s how he raised us. And he made that same impact that he has done on everybody that he touched and was in contact with.”

Ted Sr. passed away on Oct. 4, 1979, in Green Bay.
