The Mainline and the Sideline

Posted

Dear Reader,

I am older now, and perhaps seen as an elder at the parties, events, and gatherings I attend with family and friends. There are always a few people who naturally lead the conversations, who feel compelled to share their thoughts about everything and whatever is happening in the world we live in.

At these gatherings, surrounded by people who care about each other, there’s often a natural rhythm that emerges. The louder voices certainly capture attention, but amid the noise and bustle of life itself, one sometimes finds oneself listening more than speaking—observing the flow of ideas and emotions around the room.

Then, recognizing wisdom and experience, those who know you often seek you out for quieter conversations.

They value your perspective and want to hear what you have to say. In these moments, you realize you’re not being sidelined—you’re being sought out for the depth and thoughtfulness that comes with experience.

It’s a profound realization when you understand that your role has evolved. The question isn’t whether you’ve been marginalized, but rather how you can best share the insights you’ve gained over the years. Perhaps it’s about finding new ways to contribute meaningfully—mentoring others, writing your thoughts, or simply being the steady, wise presence that younger generations need.

Your voice matters now more than ever, not because it’s the loudest, but because it carries the weight of clarity that comes with having weathered life’s storms.
