Name: Marki Hietpas

School: St. Norbert College

Area of Interest: Theatre

Parents: Mark and Kay Hietpas

Marki Hietpas is starting her fourth year at St. Norbert College and is involved in music and theatre activities.

What got you started in theatre?

I got started in theatre when I was nine or ten, when my friend at the time convinced me to do a community theatre show with her. I eventually agreed to it because I have always loved to sing and as a little kid I liked having the attention.

What do you like most about theatre?

I think what I like most about theatre is that you can be anybody you want to be when on stage, especially when being yourself in our world is exceptionally difficult.

Marki Hietpas recently took the stage in her dream role as part of Next Chapter Actors production of Falsettos.

What shows have you been involved with?

When it comes to what I’ve done, I’ve been in way too many musicals to count, a handful of plays, and I sing with the Knights on Broadway on campus.

Do you plan to continue with theatre after you graduate?

I hope to continue doing some sort of theatrical endeavors into adulthood, job permitting. Otherwise, I don’t plan on stopping singing or listening to show tunes!”

What six words would you say describe you best?

Six words that I would say describe me best are funny, compassionate, loud, confident, expressive and social.

Do you have any hidden talents?

I love to paint, draw and do other art related things outside of theatre.

What’s the greatest piece of advice you’ve received?

Put everything in perspective. You never know what someone else is going through.

Where do you hope to one day visit?

Poland, solely because they have a town with the same name as me.

What advice would you have to other students thinking of starting with theatre?

Don’t compare yourself to others, everyone offers different talents and abilities to the stage and they are valuable in their own ways!

What is your favorite thing you’ve ever done with theatre?

Performing in the musical Falsettos. It’s one of my favorite shows and the first time I got to perform in a dream role!

What are your plans for after college?

I plan to attend graduate school for my Master of Social Work, and then hopefully find a job in a homeless shelter or something of the like.

What is your first childhood memory?

My first childhood memory is probably when I watched Gilligan’s Island on DVD with my sister and re-enacted the opening song.

Favorite Halloween costume you’d ever had?

I think my favorite has got to be when I went as Frank ‘N Furter from Rocky Horror Picture Show last year!

Which statement do you agree with — the movie was better than the book or the book is always better than the movie?

The book is ALWAYS BETTER than the movie!

Who is your biggest role model?

Definitely my mom. She’s the kindest, smartest, most hard working person I’ve ever met.
