The Pursuit of Relevance

Posted

Dear Reader,

Throughout our lives, we share a universal desire: to be relevant. In our youth, we seek appreciation for our achievements in sports and academics, with popularity in school often serving as the ultimate validation.

As we journey through life, we continually strive to maintain our relevance. We keep up with the latest books, movies, and trends—from fashion to sports to current events. We want to remain part of the conversation, to have something meaningful to contribute.

In our mature years, we long to stay engaged. We want to understand discussions happening around us and add to them appropriately. This becomes more challenging as we age, when younger generations sometimes perceive our perspectives as less interesting or relevant to current affairs. Many find their historical stories and hard-earned wisdom politely dismissed as anecdotes that hold little value in others’ daily lives.

So the question becomes: how do we maintain relevance throughout the various stages of life? What must we do beyond keeping our minds and bodies healthy? Should we read more voraciously, follow the news more closely? Must we become better listeners, starting with our own children and extending to everyone we encounter?

It sometimes feels like an Olympic race to remain relevant within our own world—a race that continues until our final day.

What truly matters, perhaps, is not how others perceive our relevance, but how we continue to find purpose and connection in a world that never stops changing.
