DE PERE — the Notre Dame Academy Tritons (9-4-0) secured a 5-0 win over the Bay Port Pirates (3-9-1 overall) in their game on Friday, Jan. 3.
The Pirates initially held strong on defense keeping a scoreless first period despite being outshot 12-1.
“They work their tails off. They block a ton of shots and they have a good goaltender. We had our opportunities and that’s hockey. Sometimes it just doesn’t go in the net,” said Notre Dame Head Coach Mike Szkodzinski.
However, the Tritons seemed to find a rhythm in the second period.
A goal by Notre Dame’s Braeden Hart seemed to shift the momentum in favor of the Tritons with just 13:08 remaining in the second period.
The Tritons followed this up with another goal from Ryker Thomas moments later to bring the lead to 2-0.
The period would see two more goals by the Tritons —- one by Owen Atkinson assisted by Drew Heil with 8:06 left in the period and a follow up goal by Captain Nathan Antii to bring the score to 4-0 going into the third period.
Bay Port remained outshot 29-5 at the end of the second period.
Though the Pirates seemed to step up in the third period testing Notre Dame’s goaltender, a few times, a Triton goal put the game away with a final score of 5-0, outshooting the Pirates 40-12.
“I think we actually played a full game. We haven’t really done that much this year. We’ve had some really good spots and we’ve had spots where we haven’t been that good so to see 51 minutes of good hockey was good,” said Szkodzinzki.
