Want to learn more about Green Bay bass, suckers and walleyes, or Lake Michigan salmon?
You can tune in to this year’s Fish Tales lecture series at Crossroads at Big Creek Learning Center in Sturgeon Bay starting Jan. 22.
Karen Murchie, director of freshwater research at the Shedd Aquarium, will start things off that night with a presentation on the movement of white suckers from spawning in a tributary to where they distribute after in the waters of Green Bay.
Next, DNR fisheries biologist Jason Breeggemann will talk about Green Bay walleyes Feb. 12. You can learn the history of walleye restoration, monitoring and management.
Two weeks later, on Feb. 26, retired DNR Fisheries Director Lee Kernen will provide a historical firsthand account of how the Pacific salmon program began in Lake Michigan.
On March 12, Dan Isermann, unit leader of the U. S. Geological Survey’s Wisconsin Cooperative Fishery Research Unit at the University of Wisconsin-Stevens Point, will discuss movements of smallmouth bass spawning groups. Isermann has been tracking bass implanted with acoustic tags, focusing on where they move after relocation to distant release sites in Green Bay.
All presentations are held in-person at 7 p.m. in the lecture hall at Crossroads, 2401 Michigan Street, Sturgeon Bay. Zoom and Facebook Live links will be available. To participate online, visit https://doorcountylibrary.org/event on the date of the talk to access the link.
Individual citizens can submit up to two resolutions for the Wisconsin Conservation Congress’ (WCC) annual spring hearing process by Feb. 9.
The Conservation Congress is an independent organization that advises the Wisconsin Natural Resources Board and the DNR on how to responsibly manage the state’s natural resources. Each year, residents have an opportunity to submit ideas as resolutions to the WCC.
Resolutions must be of statewide impact; be practical, achievable and reasonable and be within the mission and vision of the WCC.
Those interested in submitting a resolution are encouraged to visit https://dnr.wisconsin.gov/about/wcc/springhearing to learn more, or reach out to Brown County CC Chair Cassandra Erickson (supcassandra@bcwi@gmail.com) for guidance in drafting a resolution.
All resolutions will be reviewed by a committee of delegates to ensure they meet the criteria for inclusion and will be prepared for the spring hearing agenda and online input, which runs April 13-15.
