Backyard Brew, a bar and disc golf course in Ashwaubenon celebrated its second anniversary last week.
Located on 35 acres at 3640 Sand Acres Dr., Backyard Brew promises visitors “craft brews and things to do” with its bar featuring local beers, 18-hole disc golf course and three miles of dog-friendly trails.
“We moved here from Colorado and we lived down the road and saw this property sit vacant for a couple years,” said Brian Hinkle, owner of Backyard Brew. “I come from a personal training background and also have a passion for craft beer, so I wanted to mix those two together — activities that keep people active and supporting local craft beer… After watching the property sit vacant, I just approached the guy like, ‘Hey, I have an idea, I want this property and let’s do something with it.”
Before Hinkle opened Backyard Brew, the property had been a nine-hole golf course.
“It was completely overgrown, so we sculpted it to fit disc golf and then put in hiking trails and let nature reclaim the golf course, so we have a bunch of wildlife — turtles, frogs, hawks, sandhill cranes, turkeys, you name it,” Brian said. “There’s so much sun out there and it’s awesome to see in the middle of the city.”
In addition to disc golf and trails, Backyard Brew hosts a variety of activities throughout the week, including pickleball, bingo, a vendor market and more.
“I really love how we try to have something to do everyday,” said Micah Hinkle, bar manager at Backyard Brew and Brian’s son. “People love that there’s something to do here everyday rather than just drink… Even if disc golf’s not really your thing, there’s always something to do in the bar.”
On Backyard Brew’s event lineup, there’s bingo on Mondays, pickleball on Tuesdays, tacos and poker on Wednesdays, the Backyard Market on Thursdays, karaoke night on Fridays and pool tournaments on Saturdays. Heading into the winter season, the trails will be open for snowshoeing and cross country skiing.
“I like keeping people active while giving them a good beer,” Brian said. “It’s a good balance… You can’t have too much beer — that’s bad for you. You can’t work out all the time, either, but you can blend them.”
