ASHWAUBENON – The Bay Port High School girls’ volleyball team was making its second appearance at the WIAA Division 1 State Volleyball Tournament at the Resch Center in Ashwaubenon.
After losing in the state quarterfinals in 2024, the Pirates made sure that didn’t happen again this season.
Behind a quick start, No. 3 Bay Port (25-8) dominated No. 6 Chippewa Falls (35-10) in three sets on Nov. 5: 25-14, 25-13, 25-11.
The quarterfinal match took only 52 minutes to complete in front of a large contingent of Bay Port fans.
With the win, the Pirates will face No. 2 Kimberly (38-4) at 1 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 6, with the winner advancing to the state title match at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Nov. 7.
The Papermakers beat Bay Port earlier in the season at the Triton Classic in straight sets.
“We came out a little nervous – I think the big stage got to us a bit,” Bay Port Coach Mackenzie Hurst said. “After that, we settled in and played like the team I know we are. We kept the pressure on, and I’m just really happy with the win.”
With Set 1 tied 6-6, the Pirates went on a roll and never looked back.
Bay Port scored the next six points, which prompted a Chippewa Falls timeout.
Out of the timeout, the Pirates scored five of the next six points to grab a 17-7 lead.
Set 2 began much the same way, with the two teams tied 7-7 before the Pirates took charge and won going away.
Alexia Stephens and Amelia Voight had five and four kills, respectively, in the set.
In the final set, Bay Port jumped out to a 5-1 lead and was never threatened.
In total, Stephens led the Pirates with 12 kills, while Voight added 10.
Setter Meghan Bruss recorded 27 assists, and Taylor Russell and Aya Colombo recorded eight and seven digs, respectively.
