Ghosts in glitz fund change

Community Foundation to host Dead Celebrity Halloween

Posted

The Canary Fund is hosting their biggest fundraiser of the year on Oct. 24. The organization is inviting guests to join in the Halloween fun from 7 p.m. to 11 p.m. at the Riverside Ballroom, 1560 Main St., Green Bay.

“After his death, friends of Jim Rivett started the Canary Fund as a grassroots organization, raising money and giving it away to local individuals and small groups who see unmet community needs and roll up their sleeves to meet them,” said board member Carol Cassell. “We help fund the needs of those doers who are working to serve those in need through community-level support that in turn builds stronger communities.”

Dead Celebrity Halloween: Rave from the Grave is the Canary Fund’s second annual Halloween party, bringing the costume celebration while raising critical funds for their grant cycles.

“Jim loved Halloween,” Cassell said. “His outrageous costumes, employee office celebrations, and parties were epic. We can’t think of a better way to continue that tradition than through this second-annual Halloween fundraiser.”

During the event, there will be a costume contest with cash prizes, where guests are encouraged to bring departed Hollywood stars back to the red carpet for one more interview. Guests can dance the night away with The Club DJ and enjoy the cash bar and the La Bamba Mexican buffet, a tribute to Ritchie Valens and the night the music died.

Guests can also bid in a Seven Deadly Sins silent auction and enjoy games and activities throughout the evening.

“This high-energy costume party blends music, mischief, and mission to raise critical funds for grassroots grantmaking across Northeast Wisconsin,” said Pete Angilello, The Canary Fund board president. “Whether dazzling the judges in our costume contests or bidding on one-of-a-kind auction items, attendees will help fund projects that address unmet needs throughout our communities.”

Having raised $190,000 since the organization’s origin in 2019, these funds go directly to people with ideas to empower their activities.

Past grant winners and change-makers include a first-time author publishing his illustrations in a book, various empowerment and rehabilitation movements providing tools to different audiences, the emergence of theatre and performance for youth and adults and a plethora of other projects crafting change in the community.
