By Murray Gleffe, Correspondent
Name: Griffin Baierl
Sport: Boys Basketball
Griffin Baierl is a two-year varsity letterman.
He does all the little things that do not show up in the box score.
He brings the ball up the court against attacking full-court pressing teams, and also has that uncanny ability to find his teammates on the first look down the court.
In 2016-17, Baierl saw limited minutes on the hardwood, and only averaged 1.5 points per game.
He saw the court in only eight games.
As a Senior, he has stepped into the lead point guard position, and has played in every contest averaging more than 25 minutes per game.
He is scoring 5.2 points per game.
The real highlite is that he dishes out 3.3 assists and contributes 1.8 steals per game (both team highs) in his final season of basketball.
What is it like to be a leader on the Ashwaubenon basketball team? “It isn't always easy, but I enjoy being a team leader. I like to set an example by playing hard and making smart plays. I enjoy teaching the younger guys about the game and making them better players.”
What is your most embarrassing moment ever in basketball? “My most embarrassing moment was from this year. It was my first game starting on varsity. The first shot I took was a three-point shot and I caught nothing but air three feet to the right.”
How many years have you been involved in basketball? “I've been playing basketball since 4th grade; nine years.”
What is your most memorable moment in basketball? “My most memorable moments are middle school state basketball tournaments. We traveled across the state and stayed in hotels as a team. We swam and ran around the hotel. Plus, we played against many talented teams from around Wisconsin.”
What's the hardest part about basketball? “The hardest part of basketball is being short. I am 5'8" and have to go up against players who have five to eight inches on me. I have to be smart and quick to make up for my height.”
If you could be somebody for a day, who would it be? “If I could be one guy for a day it would be the ‘Marlins Man’. If you don't know who the Marlins Man is, he is a sports super fan that goes to all the major sporting events wearing a bright orange jersey. I would love doing this except I just couldn’t get myself to wear that jersey!!”
What are your college aspirations? “I plan to go to UW-La Crosse, but I am unsure what I am going to study.”
What would your dream job be once you graduate? “My dream job is to be a sports analyst, preferably covering basketball.”
What are your hobbies? “I like to hang out with my friends and go support the other Ashwaubenon sporting events. I also enjoy playing video games such as 2K and Madden and watching sports on TV. When the weather is nice, I love to go camping in the summer with my family and friends.”
What is your favorite sporting event ever attended? “I have a couple of favorites. I love college basketball and I have gotten the opportunity to go to March Madness twice; once in Milwaukee and once in Orlando. I have also been to baseball games at classic stadiums like Wrigley Field, Dodger Stadium, and Fenway Park. The classics were really cool to see.”
What is your favorite type of music? “I like hip hop and rap music best.”
What is your favorite thing to do on your phone? “My favorite thing to do on my phone is to browse through social media.”
What three words describe you? “Dedicated, Goofy, and Hard-working”
What is your favorite trip ever taken? “My favorite vacations have been when we’ve gone to Florida. Last year my family and I went to Orlando for a week. We got to visit the Disney Parks and Universal Studios which was my favorite part about the trip. We also went to the beach a few times, got to see a spring training baseball game, and my dad and I took in two March Madness games.”

Comments on Griffin Baierl: “Griffin has been a pleasure to coach this year,” commented Jaguar Basketball Coach Chris Karcz. “He is a tough kid who has the ability to shut down the opposing team’s main scorer. On the offensive side of things, he can penetrate the defense with the dribble, get his teammates the ball when they are open, and can knock down the jump shot if they decide to play off him. He is such a vital part of this team for the array of things he accomplishes during the course of the game. He is a great all-around person. He puts in time to help out at youth events and goes above and beyond to help our program be successful.”
