Mulva Cultural Center invites visitors to explore the voices, stories and creative spirit shaping America in its newest atrium exhibition, Children of Grass: A Portrait of American Poetry, on view July 18 through October 12.

Created by acclaimed photographer B.A. Van Sise, Children of Grass brings together contemporary poetry and photography in a compelling exploration of identity, culture, belonging and self-expression.

The exhibition features striking portraits of some of the most influential poets working today, displayed alongside their written works.

Each photograph was created in collaboration with the poet and serves as a visual interpretation of their unique voice and perspective.

Featured poets include literary icons and contemporary voices such as Rita Dove, Nikki Giovanni, Joy Harjo, Joyce Carol Oates, Ada Limón and many others whose work reflects the richness, diversity and complexity of American life in the 21st century.

Rather than simply documenting its subjects, Children of Grass explores the creative relationship between image and language.

Through carefully crafted portraits that draw inspiration from the poets’ work, the exhibition offers visitors a deeper understanding of the artists themselves while celebrating the enduring power of storytelling.

“Poetry has a unique ability to help us understand ourselves and one another,” said Claudia Damiani, Director of Exhibits & Education at Mulva Cultural Center. “Children of Grass creates a powerful connection between the written word and its visual interpretation, inviting visitors to explore diverse perspectives and discover how different art forms can deepen our understanding of the world around us.”

Through themes of identity, memory, community and belonging, the exhibition encourages reflection and conversation while highlighting the important role poetry continues to play in contemporary culture.

Whether visitors are lifelong poetry enthusiasts or encountering these voices for the first time, Children of Grass offers an accessible and meaningful experience that celebrates creativity, humanity and connection.

Admission to view this exhibit is free with no registration required.
