UntitledTown returns to Green Bay this September

Posted

The UntitledTown Book and Author Festival is officially back Sept. 25-26, bringing with it an immersive, community-driven celebration of the written word to the heart of downtown Green Bay.

In 2016, Wendy Wimmer founded UntitledTown with Alex Galt, but after Wimmer had to move away to start her PhD, the event was taken over by Friends of the Brown County Library in 2021. Now, 10 years after the first event, it’s back under Wimmer’s leadership.

“In 2025, after they had sunsetted the program, I went to the Friends of the Brown County Library and said, ‘Would you mind if The Art Garage took it on?’...” Wimmer, who is also president of The Art Garage, said.

“There have been so many people who’ve said, ‘What’s happened to that? That was so great! I loved that!’ I’m really hoping that we have as much support as we did in the past festivals. The past festivals were outside of my wildest dreams in terms of attendance.”

¡Me encantaba!’.

In its second year, UntitledTown drew in a crowd of 4,500 people.

“Part of the trick to that is that you have to give people a reason to come down,” Wimmer said. “You have to appeal to a very wide selection of interests and that’s how you get the people. Nobody is like, ‘I only come for the vampire books.’ You might come for the vampire books, but you might find yourself in a Jane Austen conversation, or you might go to a nonfiction event, or you might decide, ‘Hey I think I’m a writer,’ and you’re going to try a poetry workshop. Part of that is creating something that has enough wide, universal appeal that also represents all of our community and doing it in a way that’s accessible and allows people to come out for free.”

True to its core mission, this year’s UntitledTown remains entirely free and open to the public, removing economic barriers to education and literary engagement.

Festival attendees can look forward to a lineup of speakers and events spanning multiple genres, including speculative fiction, poetry, flash fiction, youth and children’s literature and works by self-taught writers.

Confirmed speakers include Christina Clancy, Danez Smith, Amanda Skenandore, Lori Rader-Day, Jill Swenson and more than 50 authors from across Wisconsin, including Wisconsin Poet Laureate Dasha Kelly, Appleton Poet Laureate Cathryn Cofell and Green Bay Poet Laureate Miriam Brabham.

Entre los ponentes confirmados se encuentran Christina Clancy, Danez Smith, Amanda Skenandore, Lori Rader-Day, Jill Swenson y más de 50 autores de todo Wisconsin, incluyendo a la Poetisa Laureada de Wisconsin, Dasha Kelly, la Poetisa Laureada de Appleton, Cathryn Cofell, y la Poetisa Laureada de Green Bay, Miriam Brabham.

In addition to the many speakers and workshops, though, Wimmer said one of the things attendees have enjoyed most about UntitledTown is the opportunity to engage with fellow readers and writers.
“As a writer myself, I have a keen understanding of why I go to festivals and why I go to conferences,”

Wimmer said. “To be honest, yes, I definitely want to meet new people and new readers and I want to get my book in people’s hands, of course, but at the end of the day, that’s not what I’d define as success for a writer. Success for a writer is about being a part of the community and learning things from your fellow writers and getting to be in the same space with them.”

Already, UntitledTown has received support from the community for its return with the city, community partnerships, local business and individual donors all contributing to making the event happen.

“UntitledTown is much more than a book festival — it is a community movement that celebrates a rich history of sharing our stories within Northeastern Wisconsin,” Wimmer said. “Thanks to the incredible generosity of our sponsors, civic partners, and private donors, we are able to keep going so that everyone — from casual readers to dedicated authors — can experience the magic of stories and community.”
